Size and ice

The tub to scale, the ice needed

The tub's real dimensions, drawn to scale. Just below, a calculator estimates how much ice it takes to bring your water down to the temperature you want.

Ice needed, roughly 22 kg

Pure physics, based only on the ice melting. In practice you need more, because the air, the ground and the sun warm the water. Keep the lid closed and add the ice just before your ice bath.

This calculation is not advice on how cold to go: start milder and shorter, see the safety guide.

Wall and lid

An insulated, covered ice bath

The tub's wall has three layers: PVC on the inside, against your skin, a pearl foam lined with aluminium on both faces in the middle, and PVC-coated nylon on the outside, which lets water bead off. On top, the insulated lid and the dust cover keep leaves and dust out of the water. To be clear: this insulation slows the warming, but it does not keep water cold like a tub with a chiller. Keep the lid on and add ice.

  • Three insulating layersPVC on the skin side, aluminium-lined pearl foam at the core, PVC-coated nylon on the outside.
  • Lid and coverThe insulated lid and the dust cover go back on after each ice bath and stay closed between uses.
  • A ring around the rimInflated with the hand pump, the ring forms the rim of the tub and supports your neck.

Setting up

Set up alone, without tools

Unfold the tub on level, clean and stable ground. Slide the six support tubes into their sleeves, then inflate the top ring with the hand pump supplied: it is the only part that inflates. Put the cushion in, fill it with water, then fill the tub. You sit on the cushion, back straight. To empty it, use the side hose or the bottom plug, outdoors, in a shower or over a drain. Never tip the tub over when full: the tubes could slip.

Everyday use

Where to put your home ice bath

The tub folds and moves, but once full it stays put. Choose the spot before filling it: level ground that can take the weight, some shade, and a way out for the drained water.

A garden ice bath after training

In the garden or on the patio, stand the tub on level, stable ground, ideally in the shade: in summer the sun warms the water faster. Keep the lid closed between ice baths. To empty it, the side hose sends the water to a drain or a corner of the lawn.

On the terrace, end of the day

On a balcony or roof terrace, think about weight first: full, the tub holds about 330 kg of water, plus the person in it. Ask your landlord or the building's managing agent what load is allowed. Plan where the drained water will go, using the hose supplied, so you do not flood the balcony or the flat below.

In the garage or utility room

Indoors, pick a garage, a utility room or a room with a floor drain, or place the tub next to a shower. The bottom plug then sits over the drain. The floor must be level and strong enough, and the lid should stay closed between uses, especially if children live at home.

Safety

Before your first cold plunge

A cold plunge is done calmly, and a few simple rules come first. Ask a doctor before your first ice bath if any of the situations below applies to you. Get in gradually, breathe calmly, keep your head above water and start with 1 to 2 minutes. Get out straight away if you feel dizzy or have chest pain, numbness or uncontrollable shivering. No alcohol, drugs or medicines that make you drowsy before or during the bath.

  • See a doctor firstHeart disease, high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorder, circulation disorder (including Raynaud's), diabetes, epilepsy, pregnancy, medical treatment.
  • Never aloneSomeone present and attentive always stays close by for the whole of your cold plunge.
  • Children and the lidNot for children, drowning risk: lid closed between uses, and empty the tub whenever nobody is watching.
  • Start mild and shortGet in slowly, 1 to 2 minutes to begin with, no alcohol, head always above water.

Comparison

Cold plunge tub at home: three ways

For an ice bath at home there are three options: this kit, a bathtub or converted chest freezer, and a tub connected to an electric chiller. Here is how they compare, by category, with no brands.

FAQ

Ice Bath Tub: your questions

Is a portable ice bath worth buying?

It suits you if you want an ice bath at home without a permanent installation. The tub unfolds when you need it, then folds away into its bag when the season or the space calls for it. It does not make its own cold: you add ice. We promise no effect; many people simply say they like the feeling of freshness.

How big is the tub, and who fits in it?

Outside, the tub measures 85 cm in diameter and 75 cm high; inside, 79 cm in diameter and 68 cm high, which gives 330 litres. You sit upright on the water-filled cushion, knees bent, with the water reaching your shoulders depending on your height. The scale drawing further up this page helps you picture it.

How much ice do I need, and do ice baths need a chiller?

It depends on the volume of water and how far you want to cool it. In theory, cooling 250 litres from 20 °C to 12 °C takes about 22 kg of ice; in practice you need more, because of heat losses. The calculator above does the estimate for you. This tub has no chiller and is not designed to take one.

How long does the water stay cold?

We give no figure: no measurement has been made. How long the cold lasts depends on the outside temperature, the sun and how often the lid is opened. To make it last: lid closed, tub in the shade and ice added just before your ice bath. In summer the water warms faster; the insulated wall slows this down without stopping it.

Can the tub leak?

It is the most commonly reported fault with this type of tub, at the base or around the support tubes. When it arrives, do a 24-hour leak test before your first ice bath. Two repair patches are in the box. If you find a leak on arrival, email us with photos of the spot and the water level: the shop offers an exchange.

Can you leave a portable ice bath outside, or put it on a balcony?

Yes, on level ground that can carry about 330 kg of water, plus the person. For a balcony or an upper floor, ask your landlord or the building's managing agent what load is allowed. Outdoors, keep the lid closed and never let the water freeze in the tub: before a hard frost, empty it, dry it, then fold it and store it away.

What precautions should I take before an ice bath?

See a doctor before your first ice bath if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, a heart rhythm disorder, a circulation disorder (including Raynaud's), diabetes or epilepsy, are pregnant or are on medical treatment. Never take an ice bath alone. The tub is not for children (drowning risk): keep the lid closed between uses. Get in slowly, start with 1 to 2 minutes, no alcohol, head above water, and get out at the first sign of feeling unwell.

Where can I buy an ice bath in the UK, and how do delivery and returns work?

Right here: for UK orders, the kit ships from stock held in the United Kingdom, so there is no customs step for you, and delivery is free. It is prepared in 1 to 2 working days, then delivered in 2 to 5 working days, an estimate rather than a guaranteed date. Payment goes through Stripe and your card details never reach our site. You then have 30 days after receipt to change your mind, satisfied or refunded, on top of your statutory rights.
